Grand Canyon: South or West Rim?
OK so we plan to hire a car and visit the canyon.
Never been before but don’t want to waste ALL day sitting in a car.
I read the west rim is 3 hours closer to Vegas than the southern rim – but which is a better visit/experience?
I quote fancy doing a 3-hour horseback ride – what do you think is the best thing to do????
THANKS!

has to be the South Rim this is the one that you have seen on the TV the west rim is not grand canyon NP. Although the drive is shorter to the West Rim the last 15 miles is unmade and many people get punctures.
Here is the West Rim

I have been to the Grand Canyon South Rim many times and so recommend it. The drive there from Vegas is a solid 5 hours each way and you can drive there and back in one day, taking about 18 hours including 6 or 7 hours at the GC. You will see a lot more at the Grand Canyon than at the West Rim. The West Rim is really just a Native American Reservation tourist trap with lots of high fees, like $20 to park and $29. to walk on their view bridge. You can see the same type sights at the South rim for free.
The mule rides at the South rim are generally booked up well in advance. So you are not likely to get one by showing up at about noon. The mule rides (I did one back 20 years ago) leave at about 7:00 AM and like I said they are generally booked solid.
